What is a “Friend of 4-H”?

Friends of 4-H is an opportunity for businesses to donate money to the Bartholomew County 4-H Livestock Auction without having to designate what youth’s animal is purchased.  If you cannot or prefer not to come to the sale, you still have the opportunity to support the 4-H Program and be recognized for your support by becoming a “Friend of 4-H”.

You may do this by making a minimum $50.00, tax-deductible donation to the Bartholomew County Friends of 4-H Fund.  Your donation, along with all other donations to the fund, will be combined and used to purchase animals at the 4-H Livestock Sale.  A representative of the 4-H Livestock Sale Committee will act as the bidder for the Friends of 4-H.  Stop by the Fair Office or contact Becky Speaker, Nathan Downey, Andy Whiteside or Corey Jenkins.  You can also use the form above to mail donations for the auction to Bartholomew County 4-H Fair, Attn: Livestock Auction, PO Box 342, Columbus, IN  47202.  We also have a paypal account for donations, search for barthcountyfair@gmail.com (please note that the donation is for the Friends of 4-H.)

Any business or family can participate in the Auction by registering and obtaining a Buyers' Number.

You can contact one of the auction committee members prior to the auction day or register the day of the auction.

The auction catalog will be organized as follows: Grand Champions, Swine, Poultry, Dairy Beef, Beef, Goats, Sheep, Rabbits

For this year’s livestock auction, it will be premium only, with all of the winning bid going towards the 4-Her to help them cover their expenses and prepare for the future. However, buyers may work with the 4-Her to purchase the animal for personal use processing. For example, if you are the winning bidder at $500 and do not want the animal, then you pay a flat $500 to the auction committee (who will pay the 4-Her) while the 4-Her keeps the animal. However, if you want to take the animal, you will pay the auction committee the $500, plus you will then negotiate with the 4-Her on the actual market purchase price and pay the 4-Her directly for the animal.

Payment in full is expected for all successful bids. This year, we will accept credit cards, as well as check and cash. An additional 3% credit card fee will be added to credit card payments. Invoices will be e-mailed as soon as possible after the auction, then mailed the following week. We ask that you make payments as promptly as possible so that we can pay the 4-Hers promptly.

Buyers may combine to support a single 4-Her – but the Bartholomew County Fairboard will only bill 3 buyers per 4-H member. Consolidated purchases of more than three buyers must have a central way to bill and collect payments. If you plan to participate in a large group of people bidding to support an individual 4-H’er, you must create a separate bidder number for that group purchase with more than 3 buyers. One invoice will be sent to the person who created the bidder number.

If you wish to have someone place a bid for you, contact the Auction Committee. Be sure to indicate which 4-H member you wish to bid on and how to contact you following the sale. Or you can make a general contribution to the Friends of 4-H.

The 4-H Auction Committee welcomes general contributions that can further support a 4-H’er’s livestock auction final proceeds. Please complete a Friends of 4-H form (so that we have the correct name for advertising and address) and send with your check to Bartholomew County 4-H Livestock Sale, PO Box 342, Columbus, IN 47202 or bring it to the fair office or to the auction clerk desk before the auction starts. Checks should be made payable to: Bartholomew County 4-H Livestock Auction.

If you make a donation to Friends of 4-H, you can list the family or business name on the Response form (available at the fair office, in the fairbook or posted on Bartholomewcountyfair.com website, under Sponsor, Livestock Sale.) If an in-person bidder, you will get a chance to see the name listed in the auction system when you sign in and receive your bidder card. Please note any changes on the bidder registration form. Please update the address information each year also.
