Let’s Bake a Pie Contest
Tuesday, July 13, at 6 p.m. in the Family Arts Building. Registration begins at 5 p.m. The Home Hectics Extension Homemakers Club hosts this event, with Master of Ceremonies, Dr. Sam Simmermaker “Dr. of Pie Baking Expertise.” Proceeds from donated pies will go to the Bartholomew County Extension Homemakers Association Scholarship Fund.
Children’s Baking Contest
Thursday, July 15, at 6 p.m. in the Family Arts Building. Registration begins at 5 p.m. The Common Threads Extension Homemakers Club hosts this event for children 4-12 years of age. Proceeds from donated cakes and cookies will go to the 4-H Enrichment program.
Let’s Bake a Pie Contest Information
Open to all residents of Bartholomew County.
1. All sections of pies listed below are to be registered in the Family Arts Building Tuesday, July 13 between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
2. An entry may be made in more than one section, but only one entry per section. Crust may be lard or vegetable shortening.
3. Pies will be judged on flavor, texture of crust, texture of filling, and general appearance.
4. All pies will receive 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place ribbon.
5. In each section there will be a Champion and Reserve Champion if merited. A Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion will be selected from the Champions and Reserve Champions if merited. A prize will be awarded to the Grand Champion.
6. Pies will be judged according to the following sections: No graham cracker or cookie crust in sections 1, 2, or 3.
Section 1—Cream filled pies such as butterscotch, chocolate, coconut, lemon, custard, etc.
Section 2—Fruit pies such as apple. blackberry, blueberry, cherry, peach, gooseberry, raspberry, etc.—one or two crust
Section 3—Miscellaneous filling such as custard, pecan, raisin, old-fashioned sugar cream, pumpkin, etc.
Section 4—Cookie crust or graham cracker crust—any filling
Section 5—Sugar Free
Children’s Baking Contest Information
Open to any child of Bartholomew Co. There will be two groups according to age. (4-7 years and 8-12 years. Age on day of event)
1. All sections listed below are to be registered in the Family Arts Building Thursday, July 15, between 5:00-6:00 p.m.
2. All entries must be brought on paper plates, aluminum foil covered cardboard or non-breakable dish. (Fair is not responsible for breakage.)
3. Any entry may be made in more than one section, but only one entry per section.
4. Judging will be done on flavor, texture, and general appearance.
5. All entries will receive 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place ribbons.
6. A Grand Champion will be selected from the Champions and Reserve Champions if merited in cookies and cakes.
7. All exhibits should include a copy of the recipe.
Section 1— Six (6) Cookies—drop, bar, no bake, molded, uniform in size.
(a) 4—7 years old
(b) 8—12 years old
Section 2—Cakes—plain or iced
(a) 4—7 years old
(b) 8—12 years old
An honor group will be selected for each class and must stay for final judging.
The Bartholomew County Fair and all its employees, agents, Fair Board members, committee members, judges, or agencies cannot be held responsible for accidents, injury or loss of personal property relating to these events. Judges’ decisions are final.
PRECAUTIONARY NOTE - For baked product competitions: Filling, frosting, glazing, pie filling and meringue, whether uncooked or cooked, are not permitted to contain cream cheese, whipped cream, unpasteurized milk or raw eggs/egg whites (pasteurized eggs or eggs cooked to 160 degrees F may be used). Home canned fruits, vegetables or meats are not permitted in product. Recipes must be provided that show which ingredients were used in each part of the product. Contestants should carefully wash their hands and make sure that their hands do not have any open cuts before preparing foods. Whenever possible, baked products should be transported and stored in chilled coolers (41 degrees F).
